scd4Introduction to Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog:

Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog resembles  to the longer tailed Australian cattle dog  at first glance. The Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog has square build where as the Australian Cattle Dog has rectangular build, they are slightly taller than this breed. These stumpy tail cattle dog do not have tan mark as that of  Cattle dogs. The biggest difference between the two is obvious of tail. The pups of Stumpy tail cattle dogs are born with tiny stumpy tail, which does not grow more than 4 inches when grown fully.

The Stumpy tail cattle dog have balanced head in comparison to the body. They have oval shaped eyes which are medium in size, and have wide apart set ears. The nose of the stumpy tail cattle dog is black and self colored coat. The teeth could be either scissor bite or in same level. The neck of these dogs is very strong with muscular chest and well managed ribs. The hind legs are stronger and wider in comparison to forelegs and are muscular and straight. They have short toe feet and have bob tail. They have harsh, dense, straight and medium or short coat.


The Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog  is a rugged dog with standing up ears and have long legs. The breed is named after its distinctive feature , the lack of tail. If they have tail then it is not longer than 4 inches. The coat of the dog is harsh, medium lengthen, straight and dense. The coat is in colors like speckled blue and speckled red. They do not have tan as the Australian Cattle Dog have. The height of stumpy tailed cattle dogs is in proportion to the weight. The approximate height of  the dog is 18 to 20 inches. And weight around 16 to 23 kg’s. 


The Stumpy tail cattle dogs are alert and watchful dogs. They response to its owner only and are reserved to the strangers. Like other working dogs they also need to be socialized at early stage and must be scd1trained throughout their life. They are energetic and free spirit dogs being obedient. Stumpy are suspicious to the strangers and are brave and trustworthy. It have the ability to control cattle and posses great working ability as well. The breed is very intelligent and always need a work to be done. This breed hate being tied in the backyard of the house. They are good with kids and older ones. They are very obedient when given the training and discipline from the very beginning to maintain their behavior.

Health Problems:

The major health problem which may be concerned about this dog includes PRA(progressive retinal atrophy), CHD(canine hip dysplasis), elbow dysplasis, deafness and OCD(osteochondrosis dissecans ). Apart of these health issues some other diseases can be observed in the breed occasionally are lens luxation, cataract and persistent pupillary membrane(ppm) . So it is advised to the owners to take the dog for proper checkup of eyes, elbow, ears and hips on regular basis.

Living Conditions:

Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs are mostly one person dog and can not live in apartments. They need proper yard to exercise. They are more affectionate to a single person. They love to live independently and do not require mush of affection and cuddling. They always want to have good treatment and appreciating praise though they are tough and resolute.


The short weather resistant coat needs very less care and is easy to groom. It is just needed to be brushed and combed using firm bristle brush and should be given bath when necessary. They used to shed hairs twice in a year.


The litter size of this breed is around 5 to 6 pups at a time.

Life Span:

The life span of the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is between 10 to 15 years.
