Rhodesian Ridgeback:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback  belongs to the hound family. These dogs are protective so can be a great guard dog. They are versatile hunters and are very loyal towards the master and his family. They are nice with the children which are not very young and are also protective towards them. They have strong will and are very powerful as well. They are aggressive towards other animals so must be provided with training in initial stage.

Body Structure:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback  are muscular hound which are large in size. They have broad head which seems to be flat between ears. The color of nose depends on the coat color which can be black, brown or liver. the eye color also depend on the coat color but mostly is dark brown and round in shaped. The ears are medium in size which sometimes are set high and sometimes are dropping down. They have long tail which is thicker at the base and curving slightly at the end.

Temperament and Behavior:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback are fine hunters and are very furious at the time of hunting, but while being at home they are very polite and gentle. This breed is very obedient and calm. They are well nature dogs but do not do well with small children as they play roughly. They are very loyal to the family and skillful dogs. The Rhodesian Ridgeback  are straight forward dogs with bravery. They are conservative towards strangers. They are excellent companion to the master. They enjoy the company of the master who spend time with them playing or doing work. This breed have a quality of quick learning, but provided with gentle training which should be given in the initial stage. These dogs are very good guard or watch dogs. They are very protective toward their owners. They become destructive if not provided with ample exercise or jogging.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback  have odor free short haired coat which is easy to groom. It requires brushing that not too frequently. Brushing helps in removing the dead hairs. They are average shedder so do not require mush of shampooing but requires when necessary. Many accessories are available to groom the pets.

Health Issues:

This breed is mostly healthy but can be infected with some of the common dog diseases. They get speciousness hip dysplasia, sinus and cysts. They sometimes get prone to skin diseases and cell tumors.


The Rhodesian Ridgeback is very fond of running. They need daily physical exercise to feel relaxed, if they did not get regular exercise or mental exercise they get frustrated easily. They are very nice jogging companion. They love to sleep indoors. Their coat requires minimum care.

The height of Rhodesian Ridgeback  male is between 25 to 27 inches where as the female have a little low of 24 to 26 inches.


The male of Rhodesian Ridgeback  weight around 35 to 40 kg where as the female have their weight between 30 to 35 kg.

Life Span:

The average life period of Rhodesian Ridgeback is around 10 to 12 years.
